I found a bug in my Facebook Purity script that meant the script would fail if there were no pending requests on the users homepage. Ive fixed the bug now. If you have the script installed, i would recommend you reinstall it, you can get the script here
I cleaned out all the spam that was in this blogs moderation queue, and decided to do something about preventing it. Since my host has disabled outgoing net connections, my akismet spam protection plugin has stopped working, so the spam queue filled up a lot.
I decided to try and find a new spam prevention plugin that doesnt need to make outgoing server calls. I tried 2 plugins, both are really good, and easy to install.
First i tried “Math Comment Spam Protection” , but for some reason it wasnt working for me, i thought it might be because it was compatible with my version of wordpress. anyway i uninstalled it.
Then I tried the reCaptcha plugin, it seems to be quite popular and features on lots of high profile sites, so thought it must be pretty good.

Its even easier to install than the math comment plugin, but alas it also didnt work for me, this time though it was due to the fact my server doesnt allow outgoing net connections, which is pretty annoying. One good thing came out of installing it though, i noticed the options page for this plugin is separate from the plugin menu, which had been confusing me about the previous plugin.
So i reinstalled the math comment plugin, and found the options page for it, and now it looks like its working fine, so bye bye spam! h0oray! and many thanks to the plugins authors, who have done us all a huge favour! :)
I released a new version of my facebook purity greasemonkey script that blocks annoying application spam messages from your facebook homepage. This new version shows the number of messages that were blocked, and also lets you show the messages that have been blocked, if you are curious, and also hide them again when you have had enough.
Interestingly though facebook have also released some code changes today, that allow you to more easily block messages from specific applications. they now give you two options when you hover over the message, 1) hide messages from that user and 2) hide messages from that application. its a lot better than just being able to block messages from a specific user.

As well as blocking application messages it now also blocks messages telling you “x became friends with y”, “x is attending an event”, “x joined a group” and “x became a fan of y”, you can easily click the new “extras x [ Show ]” link to see them again if you so wish.

In this update I added a “Block Application” link that lets you block the applications rather than just simply hiding them. This stops them getting any information about you, stops people sending you requests to add the app and sending you messages etc. I also changed the way the “Show/Hide” app messages link works, the [ Show ] link now isolates the application messages and hides the normal newsfeed messages while you look them over, clicking the [ Hide ] link, will return your feed to normal, i.e hide the application messages, and show the normal feed messages. I’ve also added the Blackberry application to the default whitelist. Remember, if you have edited the application whitelist in the previous version of the script, to copy the application IDs from there, and paste them into the new version

I optimised the script a bit and also added a few more apps to the default whitelist ( tumbler, digsby and tweetdeck ). Please note if you have previously edited the scripts whitelist, please make a copy of your list of IDs before updating the script, as you will need to paste in your list to the new version after you have updated the script.
Script updated 4th September 2009 – Rather than a change in the FB code, this time the reason for the update is the new Facebook application for the Iphone, which posts messages to your homepage as if it was a third party application, and therefore gets blocked. Ive updated the script so it no longer blocks messages from the Iphone app. I’ve also altered the code to make it easier to add other applications to your own personal whitelist, which means a list of applications that won’t get blocked by the script. I’ve also added “Selective Twitter” to the default whitelist. Instructions on how to edit the whitelist
Script updated 26th August 2009 – Yet another code change at FB, means yet another update to the script. Reinstall the script from the link above for the fixed version. If it still doesn’t work after reinstalling, try clearing your browser’s cache, then reinstalling again, as the browser might have cached an old copy of the script. Also check whether you have more than one version of the script running at the same time, you can check this in the Tools/Greasemonkey/Manage Userscripts menu. There should only be one version of the script running, if theres more, uninstall the old version/s.

Script updated 29th July 2009 – Due to a code change at facebook, the script was hiding the whole newsfeed. To remedy this, first uninstall the old version of the script, by going to the Firefox “Tools” menu, then selecting “Greasemonkey” then “Manage UserScripts” then click the Facebook Purity script then click the uninstall button, then re-install the updated version from the link above. ( N.B) if fb purity still isnt working for you after this, try clearing your browsers cache, then re-installing again, as your browser may have cached a copy of the old script.

Well Google Chrome came out of beta today, this is great news. Though as most win 2000 users will know by now, google chrome doesnt work on your operating system. But a clever Japanese guy known as BlackWingCat has created an installer program that lets you install it to your system relatively easily. Unfortunately the instructions on his website how to install it are all in japanese, luckily a guy named Tom managed to figure out how to install it and has provided the following instructions (found here):
0/ Download crm2k017b.zip (latest file will always be available from here) and extract all files to a directory.1/ Run Chrome2K.exe2/ Leave settings at XP and IE63/ Click “set compatible Reg” then “Set UserAgent” … this enables the 3rdbutton “Access Chrome Web site”4/ Click on 3rd button to go to Google download site, then click Download from site5/ After Google finished downloading and installing Chrome, click “Patch to …”,then click “Install User32 …”6/ Reboot without clicking the last button “Clean up”7/ When computer is up, click Start/Programs/Google Chrome/Google ChromeAnd bingo! I just found a cool greasemonkey script on userscripts.org by a person called Vorn. The script is called Linkoder (QRCode) – it can basically add Barcodes for each link on any web page. Its really useful for mobile phone users, with barcode reader applications on their phones, such as the N95 which comes with a barcode reader app as standard, as it saves them typing in long URLs, instead they can just scan the barcode on their PC screen, and then browse directly to the link with their phones web browser.

I wrote a new Greasemonkey script that lets you import your photos from your account on the picasaweb website to your Flickr account.
In order to run the script, you need to be usin gthe Firefox web browser, which you can get from here: http://mozilla.org/firefox

Once you have those 2, you can install the script simply by clicking here
The script functions on 2 types of pages on the picasweb site, on album pages and also on the organize album pages. On normal picasaweb album pages, a link will appear above the list of thumbnails called “Export 2 Flickr” and it will have the blue and pink flickr dots beside it. Clicking the link will export the whole album to flickr one image at a time.
On the organize page of the album, the Export 2 Flickr link also appears above the list of thumbnails, but on this page you can select exactly which images you wish to upload by clicking and selecting the thumbnails of the images you wish to import into Flickr.
The script just imports the photos, it doesnt copy the image titles or descriptions, and also doesnt create new sets for each album. For the image title it just uses the filename of the image on picasaweb, eg if the image on picasaweb is called 100124.jpg on flickr it will be titled “1000124”. The description gets set as the full URL to the image on picasaweb. These 2 things are not done by the script itself, they are actually done by flickrs upload system.

I just read about the Nokia Internet Radio application for the N95 and thought it sounded interesting, so decided to try and download it. First of all i tried visiting the nokia download page on my N95, but the download link was nowhere to be seen, the instructions on the page say you need to use Nokia PC suite to download the app, not very useful when you are browsing on your phone. In fact its pretty crazy that Nokia of all companies doesnt seem to have a Mobile version of its site.
Anyway i then tried visiting the page in my PC’s web browser – Firefox 3, and crazily enough, i couldnt see the download link there either! Insania! I did notice that there was a hidden flash file on the page, this is because i use the excellent FlashBlock add on which blocks all flash content on pages, and lets you choose which flash files to load. Anyway I guessed they must be hiding the download link in the flash file, so enabled the flash file to load, but still no sign of any link. I then decided to try disabling FlashBlock for the nokia site, then reloaded the page. This actually worked, I was then presented with a small applet that allows you to choose which phone you are using, so you can select the appropriate file to install. Hmmm a lot of rigmarole, just to find a simple download. Anyway to save others the hassle, heres a direct link: http://tinyurl.com/3at5rl to the N95 version of Nokia Internet Radio and also a Barcode version of the link, in case you want to try out the N95 barcode reader and save yourself some typing :)
The application itself is really good, best used over a wifi link though :)
It basically lets you listen to streaming internet radio on your phone. They have a large direc tory of stations, but you can add specific stations if you know the stream URL
I finally got round to updating my Flickr Groups Organiser greasemonkey script.
It now works fine with the latest version of Greasemonkey and also the latest Firefox.
Ive also modified the script, so the “quit group” links only show up if you click the “show quit links” link at the top of the groups list page. I did this as it was sometimes possible to accidentally click on the quit groups links by mistake, now they only show up if you actually enable them.
