Accessing your 3mail - email and 3's "walled garden" content on your PC via your NEC e616v

I just figured out how to connect my PC to my my NEC e616v mobile phone so that i can send and receive my 3mail directly on my PC.

Firstly in order to actually check your 3mail account on your PC you need to connect your PC to your phone, i believe you can do this via Bluetooth as well as USB, though im not 100% sure, as i dont have a bluetooth adaptor for my PC, in my case I connected it via USB. To do this you need to just put the cd that came with your phone into your PCs drive and then plug your phone into the usb socket. Then just go through the hardware wizard, you need to install 4 drivers, so just follow the wizard, and it should install them all for you.

Once youve installed the drivers, heres the instructions on setting up a connection to your phone for Windows 2000 users, it should be similar for other windows operating systems too.

1) Go to Start/Settings/Network and Dialup Connections
2) Make New Connection
3) Click Next
4) Dial up to the Internet
5) I want to setup my internet connection manually
6) I connect through a phone line and modem
7) In the drop down box, select "NEC 616 USB Modem"
8) Click Next
9) Untick the "use area code and dialling rules" box
10) Enter *99# as the telephone number
11) Click Next
12) Enter your 3 mobile number as the username and leave the password blank
13) Click Next
14) you will be warned that you havent entered a password, ignore the warning and continue
15) Give your new connection a name, something like "NEC e616v" should do
16) Click Finish And thats the connection to your phone setup.

17)Make sure your USB cable is plugged into your phone
18) Go back to the "Network and Dialup Connections" window and double click your new connection.
19) After a few seconds you should now be connected to your phone.

20) Follow the instructions which ive quoted below, originally posted by Dimitri Sampson in the 3gnewsroom forum on how to setup your 3mail in outlook/express or whatever IMAP compatible mail client you have on your PC.

-------------------------------------------

Once you are connected, you can startup Outlook or your mail program and put in the following settings :-

IMAP Server - imap.three.co.uk
SMTP Server- smtp.three.co.uk
Username - your email name (e.g. dmitris)
Password - your password (the one you setup when you first started 3mail on your phone, usually a 4 digit pin password)

with this you can pull in your emails and any voicemails down to your PC.

-------------------------------------------------

21) you can also browse the walled garden content in your web browser, though i seem to be having a problem getting this working, i can see the pages, but i cant seem to click the links, if anyone can figure out whats wrong please let me know. Anyway to get to the walled garden content enter the following URL http://mobile.three.co.uk/hb/vtb/HutchKey/ into your PCs web browser while you still have a connection to your NEC e616v phone or try this one http://mobile.three.co.uk//hb/3g/uk/vtb/grid/live which shows you the services page.

Enjoy exploring :) And if you find out how to get the webpages to work, please let me know... Cheers,

Steeev

the reason you cant access the links on the web pages is because the network can identify that you are using a windows based web browser, i am currently writing a browser in the same language as the phones browser, hopefully this should work.

http://mobile.three.co.uk/hb/lg/HutchKey/ & http://mobile.three.co.uk//hb/3g/uk/vtb/grid/live work as links from IE, the encoding is slightly different to allow use on LG handsets and it seems to work quite nicely through IE

Sorry, my bad, second link should be:

http://mobile.three.co.uk//hb/3g/uk/lg/grid/live

Thanks Andrew! thats just the info i was looking for :)

Though when i tried to browse via the link you supplied in IE or Firefox, most of the pages were saying "please connect to this page via your 3 handset"

So i decided to try and fool their server into thinking Firefox was the NEC e616v browser, i did this by finding out the UserAgent string of that phones browser, which i found by sending a webpage with some embedded javascript code to the phone. The UserAgent string is "ACS-NF/3.0 NEC-e616/001.01" so then I downloaded and installed the Firefox extension called "User Agent Switcher" from http://tinyurl.com/3dfc6 which lets you set a custom user agent string, and put in the aforementioned string. After that I was able to browse all 3's walled garden content fine :)

Could somebody tell me if software is available for the NEC 616 (using the usb connection cable supplied) enabling me to "Dial Up" to my usual isp and thus downloading any content on the internet. I realise the connection speed would be slow (14000?) but at least good enough for e-mail and with patience, anything one could possibly want?

At 5 pence a minute, i think i could suffer the speed???

HOW TO INSTALL USB DRIVER
OK! i have the Exact way to do this. It works.
There are other ones like
"http://steeev.freehostia.com/mt/2005/01/download_nec_e616v_drivers_and_file_transfer_applica

tion...."
But i tell you actually How to do it.
-----------------!!FOLLOW EXACTLY!!--------------------
I just want to say that if you have the CD, you most likely Do actually have the USB

drivers. Just because u can't 'download' off the CD in that screen thing doesnt mean

its not there...n00b. lol. If you explore the cd (right click it in My Computer, and

click open). you most likely have it.

Ok, now Follow if you don't have the software CD (Don't do this if you have the

software CD!! See below)

First, get all your software together.
Download the File Transfer Tool from:
http://e616.socom.dk/
Also Download the Nec e616 USB Drivers
http://www.nec.se/upload/USB_Drivrutin_e616.zip
(when downloading this, save it to an easy destination, lets save C:\Nec USB\ [or

whatever your main hard drive is, example D:\ E:\ etc.])
You also need Adobe Reader. You shouldn't need a link for that. and if u do, then your

a n00b. and u suhldnt be here. lol

Ok, now Follow if you don't have the software CD (Don't do this if you have the

software CD!! See below)

1. Turn your e616 on.
2. Connect your e616 to the PC/Laptop using the USB cable (provided in your e616 box).
3. Install by following the "New Hardware Wizard" instructions that are automatically

displayed on screen. Select option that lets you choose the location you want.
4. When asked where to locate the driver files, select the following folder from your

Hard drive.
Windows2000/XP: C:\Nec USB\WIN2000
Windows98SE: C:\Nec USB\WIN98
5. The wizard will automatically display the first file to install. (On WIN XP,

proceeding to the next step automatically)
6. Press “Next” to install the file and “Finish” to complete the wizard.
-There are a total of four files to install. On selecting “Finish” you will be taken

through the process a further 3 or 4 times. OR untill it finally says Finished, use

your software now. So you'll do process 3-6 about 3 or 4 times.

Notes
•When the message appears saying that there is no digital signature for driver during

installation, click “Yes” to continue installation procedures. Installation and

operations after that are not affected.
•For Windows XP users a message may appear saying that the software has not been

Windows logo tested, click "Continue anyway" to continue installation procedures.

Ok, Follow If have Software CD (Don't do this if you don't have the CD, following

instruction above.)

1. Start Windows on the PC/Laptop (make sure all active applications are closed).
2. Place the "e616 Tools and Utilities" CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
3. Turn your e616 on.
4. Connect your e616 to the PC/Laptop using the USB cable (provided in your e616 box).
5. Install by following the "New Hardware Wizard" instructions that are automatically

displayed on screen.
6. When asked where to locate the driver files, select the following folder in your

CD-ROM:
Windows2000/XP: \616\PC Drivers\USB driver\English\WIN2000
Windows98SE: \616\PC Drivers\USB driver\English\WIN98
7. The wizard will automatically display the first file to install. (On WIN XP,

proceeding to the next step automatically)
8. Press “Next” to install the file and “Finish” to complete the wizard.
-There are a total of four files to install. On selecting “Finish” you will be taken

through the process a further 3 times.

Now you should have the File Transfer on your CD. So you actually didn't need to

download anything :D... if u did think u need to then noooo n000b. lol. BUT if your cd

seems not to actually have it (example, when your explore your cd, its not actually

there), follow the instruction for if you downloaded it.

Ok! Now just connect your nec e616 up to your computer, click menu, then clik external

connection, then USB, then handset memory(sometimes it will automically click handset

memory). (Menu, then click 7, then click 2, then 1 if you have to. Then open up your

file transfer tool and knock your self out!

Now honestly i got most of this from the nec PDF manual but it seems people dont read

that. so i basically got all the stuff out and tried to make it more simplier. and u

know? i dont care if this helps you or not. i was bored, and installed my driver once

before, then my computer got formatted and i had forgotten how to do it, so i had to

use forums again. so im doing this for my memory too. so i hope this does help you.

for the expert nerds and the n00bs. and if it doesnt, then MeH!! lol. email me if you

have any questions: charchuckes@hotmail.com. hi im charli, and im 14 and a girl. lol

4got to tell ya :P.

Have fun!
