My first Firefox Extension - Ebay Negs! - Lets you check the negative feedback an eBay user has received.

I just read the brilliant tutorial at Roachfiend.com on how to write extensions for Firefox and I decided it would be fun to write one myself, So I decided to convert my eBay negative feedback checker bookmarklet into a Firefox Extension, and the roachfiend tutorial helped out a great deal :) It was pretty straightforward to convert, and you can try it out here: Ebay Negative Feedback Firefox Extension

Any feedback gratefully received :)

UPDATE 19/1/2005 A new updated version (0.6) of this extension has been released, thanks to a cool dude called Guido who supplied some brilliant code to extend Ebay Negs' functionality. If you have got the old version (0.5) installed you can use Firefox's update feature to update it to the new version. To do this go to the "Tools/Extensions" menu, then click the "Updates" button. This version allows you to right click on Ebay username links without having to highlight them first, it also alllows you to rightclick anywhere on an ebay auction page and it will try to automatically work out the username.

Feedback:

1) I'd prefer to be able to right-click on a username without having to first highlight it. This would make it less fiddly to use. As a workaround (short of usual click 'n' drag to highlight), double-click can be used to highlight the username if it's not hyperlinked, and alt+double-click can be used if it's hyperlinked, so long as the username doesnt contain underscores. Still, MUCH prefer to not have to highlight the text in the first place.

2) Everytime I use this tool I have to dismiss a dialog. I would like a user option to prevent the dialog from being shown. This option would be accessed in the usual way (Tools > Extensions > Options).

3) I would prefer it if ebay's own webpage was used to display the negative feedback instead of a third party page.

Keep up the good work.

Rgds, Ant

Agree with #3 from Anthony otherwise this is an excellent tool that I was able to immediately use. Thanks for making this available!

I agree with comment #1. It would be much smoother if it worked like the original IE implementation. It's a good first try, you should put it with the extensions at Mozilla.

It won't run for me - says 'www.toolhaus.org could not be found...'

Posted by: Martha at April 24, 2005 01:06 AM

Seems to work with Mozilla, too. Great!!

Posted by: Tad Mackie at May 10, 2005 04:24 PM

This *was* working great but now it isn't - I get an error when I right click on the user ID and then click on eBay Negs from the menu:

It says 'www.toolhaus.org could not be found...'

Help - I love this tool!

I made a Greasemonkey version. It puts a red neg icon next to the seller's feedback number, and adds a "Just Negatives" link to the feedback display. Right now, the only bug is it doesn't work on actual auction pages.

This sounds like a fabulous tool, and I would love to have it. I have been trying for over an hour, and it is not working for me. When I try to install the negs-menuXP.reg it give me an error message when I get to the "enter into registry" portion. I would really appreciate some help on what I am doing wrong. Thanks.

Posted by: retro at June 3, 2005 09:40 AM

retro, ive got no idea what you are talking about. you shouldnt need to enter anything into the registry, and what is negs-menuXP.reg ??? never heard of it...

Posted by: steeev at June 3, 2005 05:35 PM

steeev, he's talking about the add-ons for Internet Explorer, not your wonderful Firefox extension. (Have I thanked you for your work, recently? THANKS!)

retro, it sounds like you might not have permission to write in the registry. If you need further assistance, please send me mail!

Great extension but I get errors when I try to "update" all firefox extensions. Go to Tools->Options->Advanced->Software Update->Check Now to see the error it reports about ebay negs

Great tool that works fabulous. Would be nice however to be able to view negatives received and posted as a split screen is only possible addition.

Thanks for the hard work!

Posted by: Thor at December 13, 2005 01:39 PM

Used EBAYNEGS and absolutely loved it but then I upgrade FIREFOX. Would you please post info' on this website telling us if an updated version of EBAYNEGS is in the works?

Posted by: Ron at December 20, 2005 04:56 PM

Please update so it'll run on Firefox 1.5.

Thanks!

Great Tool!!! This idea should be encorporated in the EBay site. I would be interested to hear if there have been discussions with EBay about this concept.

Posted by: poptun at December 24, 2005 05:57 PM

hey, sounds good. will this work on firefox using mac osx?

Posted by: sam at December 28, 2005 07:01 PM

Another plea to get this fixed for FF1.5 - Ebay just ain't the same without it!

Go shareware if necessary - I would happily pay a fiver for it...

Posted by: Jack Bold at December 31, 2005 02:36 AM

Doesn't work with Firefox 1.5?

Posted by: Mike at January 8, 2006 11:46 PM

Absolutely brilliant extension - thanks for your time working on this. Firefox just leaves IE eatin' dust!

Posted by: Cru at January 11, 2006 01:22 AM

It is NOT compatible with FF v1.5!

Posted by: Chris at January 14, 2006 05:58 PM

IT WORKS! Thanks to Lisa (whoever she is), there's now a version of this extension which works on Firefox 1.5, as well as 1.0.x and presumably everything in-between.
